Critical Reflection
Establishing challenging learning goals in the classroom needs to be appropriate and measurable, that caters to the diverse range of abilities of individual students. In order for students to achieve these goals, they need to be supported through scaffolding and explicit instructions (Classroom Connection, 2007). This is evident in artefact 1, which develops students fundamental movement skills through various scaffolding activities. When developing effective lesson sequences, it is integral that teachers plan according to their content and pedagogical content knowledge, their students‘ knowledge and understandings, and the resources available (Passey and Hobrecht, 2007). This is demonstrated through artefacts 1 and 2. Teachers need to be equipped with proficient knowledge, skills, and ability in order to provide effective teaching strategies, which improves student learning (Loughran, 2014). Therefore, utlilising a range of teaching methods and resources, including ICT, can be used to further develop students’ skills, as well as enhance educational experiences, as demonstrated in artefact 3 (Passey and Hobrecht, 2007).
Effective classroom communication, including verbal and non-verbal forms, have a positive impact on learning performance. Effective communication is promoted through understanding students’ needs, adapting teaching to facilitate learning styles, and a positive classroom environment (Shan, Li, Shi, Wang, and Cai, 2014). This is evident in artefact 1, where various forms of communication are used to support student learning. The importance of evaluating teaching programs, allows the teacher to assess methods, and instructional choices to improve teaching and learning, as shown in artefact 4 (Syer, Chichekian, Shore, and Aulls, 2013). Lauchlan (2012) explores the necessity of feedback to engage parents, in order to improve and support the individual learner, which is supported in artefact 5.
