My Teaching Philosophy
The beliefs, values, and actions of the teacher, influences the classroom environment that students will engage in learning. As a teacher, I hope to motivate and inspire students, to not only learn but also to develop into a person that betters society. I aim to achieve this through the teaching and learning that is based on a pedagogy of student-centred learning, that is encouraged in a safe and inclusive learning environment. It should be noted, that I am also a learner, and that I learn from students, as much as they learn from me, if not more.
I believe that successful learning is encapsulated by student-centred learning. Teachers should not be vessels of knowledge that fill students with information, but rather encourage students to grow together and individually to explore new knowledge and understandings. Shuell (1986) expresses this approach to teaching as, “Without taking away from the important role played by the teacher, it is helpful to remember that what the student does is actually more important in determining what is learned, that what the teacher does.” In this sense, we should focus on how students learn, rather than entirely on how to teach. To promote this, the needs of the individual learner should be supported in their learning, and encouraged to express and investigate their ideas.
Primarily, students should be encouraged to become active, and engaged learners, in their own learning experiences. Every classroom is unique, so the learning experiences should be tailored to the needs and interests of the students. In this respect, the curriculum should be a foundation to the learning, rather than the central focus.
High but achievable standards should be expected, but the student also needs to be intrinsically motivated to enhance the student-teacher relationship and their learning. The teacher should provide opportunities for the students to engage in their learning, and by listening to the student voice; this encourages the student to not be afraid to express their ideas. In respect to the wider community, this would encourage students to contribute to a better society by taking self-directed action. The teacher should guide and scaffold the learner, while ensuring the student develops the knowledge, understanding, and the necessary skills to become proactive citizens. In relation to a student-centred approach, the teacher needs to establish goals and expectations, provide worthwhile resources, ensure quality teaching, to lead the successful learning and development of the student, and secure a safe learning environment.
A safe and supportive learning environment promotes student wellbeing and the learner. As a teacher, I hope to instil social and emotional learning that encourages the student to understand their potential, engage in learning, and be resilient. I aim to achieve this in an inclusive learning environment, where students feel welcomed and valued, and where diversity is recognised and celebrated. A positive and professional relationship between teacher and students contributes to a safe learning environment. The teacher should recognise that each student has different needs, prior knowledge, experiences, and abilities that should be supported in their learning.
I hope to build a classroom that enhances each individual learner in a safe learning environment. As teachers, it is our philosophy and actions that encourage students to be active and engaged learners, in the aim to become individual learners, inclusive, and resilient.
